When people love you too much there is a reason! #ProudToBeAnEngineer

Same stands for Engineering as a career. There is a reason why it is an evergreen career option.

It’s become fashionable to criticize people who hope their kids take up engineering as a profession in life. But the truth is the criticism is for the idea of influencing your child’s choice of career on the basis of market demand and not for engineering as a profession.

The world will require engineers for ages to come for creating, constructing, maintaining, renovating, recycling to reusing everything humans use in this world from phones to satellites, software to supercomputers,  from taps to dams, from tricycles to space shuttles, from tents to skyscrapers, from needles to Robotic check-ups, the list is never ending!

So if you have the #IAM – Interest, Aptitude and mindset to become an Engineer  you are lucky to have the option of working under and over the seas, on land and in mines, over the mountains and in tunnels, on the frozen Poles to the hot deserts, and in homes and space stations.

After equipping yourself with an engineering degree you can become an engineering College professor, a research and development engineer, production or quality control engineer, marketing or sales and service engineer in the branch of  Computer Science and Information Technology , Electronics and Communication , Electrical , Mechanical , Civil, Aeronautical, Automobile, Chemical,  Architecture, Petroleum, Automation and Robotics, Genetics, Marine, again a long list of options to suit your Interest.

Where you get your degree from matters in your initial years of job hunting, once experienced your work and attitude speaks.  Before taking admission in a B. Tech course please check its credibility from the Ministry of Human Resource Development website.

Skill Set Stories – The Career Counselor

Who is a career counselor?

Career counselors are not just some people you are vaguely aware of and who you meet once in a while. It is a fact that many times, people, especially students, are simply unaware of the number and types of career choices that are available today. A number of factors tend to influence your career. These include your background, personality, interests, and obviously your abilities. A career counselor is basically the person who stitches (figuratively, of course) all these bits and pieces and helps you see the bigger picture towards an ideal career.

Why become a career counselor?

Image-15

Let’s be frank, if asked, children would probably tell you how they want to be astronauts, scientists, etc. or the more unconventional answers of writer, photographer, designer, would greet you. There are not many people who would want to become a career counselor, and that is just the hard fact. But what people fail to realize is the importance of mentors in one’s life.

A career counselor is someone who can offer you an unbiased diagnosis of your skills and help you set down the right path. Becoming a career counselor is a progressive way of contributing to the overall development, as the more people are happy in their roles, the more successful will they be.

The skills that a career counselor requires:

Empathy

Image-17

No matter what the economic condition of the job market is at the time, a job hunt tends to take a toll on applicants. Empathy on the part of a career counselor can help the clients confide more openly, making the career counselor a trustworthy individual to confide in.

Insight

Image-18

Insight is what can help a career counselor read between the lines of what your clients say. With good insight, it is easier for career counselors to develop action plans that focus on the strengths and preferences of their clients.

Communication

Image-19

Communication skills are integral in the profession of career counselling. Career counselors have to be polite yet assertive, compassionate yet precise to their clients about their assessments. They also need to be active listeners as that can help them understand their clients better.

Flexibility

Image-20

Throughout their career, a career counselor will counsel clients from different walks of life. He needs to be flexible enough to be able to deal with each client in a different form. A rigid, clinical approach is not something that can work here.

Subject Matter Expertise

Image-21

Career counselors have to have a passion for helping others, and though they may begin their education with a bachelor degree in any field, there are some master’s programs for counseling that require the applicant to have a bachelor’s degree in psychology or a related field, because it’s essential to be qualified before you get on the job.

Pressure does not equal excellence

Someone once said that if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. Though mostly people think it was Einstein that said it, there isn’t much proof to support the fact. But that in no way changes the depth and meaning of what has been said. Not every child is the same and not everyone has the same inclinations or capabilities.

Image-8

As a parent, you would of course want only the best for your child – good grades, top colleges, and lucrative careers; and it is obviously true that the base of knowledge that they form at school will be what helps influence their future. What does this then entail? Many parents end up putting intense pressure on the children, telling them to earn great grades irrespective of the toil it might take on them. Mostly, the result of this is an adverse effect on the performance that can often lead to physical, social, and emotional stress.

Why Parents Use Pressure

Image-9

Wanting their kids to do well in school is only normal and such pressures from the parents are at many times unintentional. But when you see that we live in a world where a child would take the easy way out of copying in the exams, we see a system in front of ourselves that values grades much more than learning. Academic intensity along with the looming fears that surround college admissions makes the parents ramp up academic pressure.

Stress

Image-10

Social withdrawal, loss of interest in hobbies, burnout, cheating, eating disorders and sleep deprivation are just a few of the ailments that have increased in evidence these days. Unfortunately, these symptoms of stress and anxiety stem mainly from the unending parental pressure that kids are under these days.

The Facts

Image-11

As iterated above, not every child is the same and not every child can be expected to excel at some standardized tests that are designed to test knowledge and not skills. Another important thing to remember is that academic success is not the only thing that can determine a child’s future. These days there are a number of career fields available for children.

It is very important that you as a parent are aware of the possibilities. This is where good career counseling can actually help you in determining the aptitude of your child. Career counseling in India has been picking up steam ever since parents have started realizing that there are a host of new and rewarding career options on offer.

What Can Parents Do

Image-12

Consider this without bias – are you putting undue pressure on you children? If you are, then it’s time that you ease off. It is your job to help keep their stress levels under check, and not add to them.

Talk: If they at any point seem overwhelmed, talk to them or talk to their counselors. Get to the bottom of their problem and help solve it.

Support: Nurture your child’s interests. If they find science and mathematics to be dull but love to draw, encourage that, and enroll them for an art class.

Understand: Remember that everyone’s interest can lie in different fields and that is completely okay!

Be Realistic: Make sure that the expectations that you set are realistic, and unless you have a child who miraculously loves each and every subject, expecting A’s all across the board is definitely not realistic.

Time out: Most importantly, give your child a chance to relax. Like adults, children too need some time off, and unlike adults, children are not that good when it comes to dealing with anxiety.

Image-13

A little pressure might work well, but there is a thin line between optimum and too much pressure; learn your child’s strength and support them in their decisions. Being there for them is the best that one can do today.
